April 21, 1945 - Morning - GQ. Have just passed mouth of Davao Gulf. This is some pretty scenery around here this morning. We are passing a volcano on Mindanao which seems to have popped out of an otherwise completely level stretch of ground. I don’t know how high it is, but it is pretty big. The sun is coming up on the other side of it and it sure makes a pretty picture. We can also see in the distance, a volcano on over the island nearer to Davao. I think it is the highest peak in the Philippines.

February 25, 1945 - Morning - Beached at Morotai, preparing to take on part of the 84th CB’s for load to Palawan in the Philippines. This sure is a muddy place. Evening - Went ashore to help get ship service supplies. We went about 10 miles inland. We requisitioned a truck from Quartermaster Motor pool.

January 28, 1945 - Anchored off San Jose’Mindoro in the Philippines. There is an airfield in front of us and B-24’s are landing and taking off there . The land along the waters edge is flat but there are some big mountains further back. There is a tanker, or what used to be a tanker off of our port bow. It has burned completely up down to the water line. A Jap plane hit it and it exploded some high octane gasoline and then the fuel oil caught on fire and it is still burning. It isn’t anything but a mass of molten steel now. We are to lay over here 4 days and go in D-Plus 5 on the lower part of Luzon.
