May 9-14, 1944 - Going down the Ohio and Mississippi River – The land is really pretty all the way down, but I think that the Ohio is prettier than the Mississippi because of all the mountains along the river on the Ohio. The Ohio is really crooked. We passed a cave in a mountain where Jessie James is supposed to have stayed. I think that it was part of a national park. The Mississippi is really up (it flooded in 1944). We passed lots of houses stranded out in the middle of the river. There was no way for the dwellers to get out except in boats. I would hate to live like they did. There was one car that we passed that you could only see the top of. We passed three LCT’s tied together somewhere below Cario. We passed over a lot of locks but the river was so flooded that they didn’t bother us. We also passed under a lot of bridges. Most of the bridges that we passed under they had cops or SP to keep the cars off until we got passed. After we passed St. Louis the radioman that we had on here got off so we started standing watches ourselves-the Radiomen were Bill Halstead, from Pennington Gap, Virginia, Bills from Excelser Springs, Missouri, Rene from New York, and me.
