This WWII Journal chronicles the life of an USNR Radioman, my grandfather-in-law, on board the LST 740. The Journal includes dates from 4/20/1944 through 5/29/1945.
August 15, 1944 - Sighted New Guinea. They are still fighting the Japs here. It is a hilly jungily looking place. Evening-Passing New Britain and a bunch of small islands. One island we passed was an 8,000 feet high volcano. Sighted a lot of ships including surfaced sub. They were all ours.
